I recently had someone reach out to me and asked me about how to handle “binge eating”, and I think it’s an important topic to revisit.
First, notice how I put “binge” in quotes. That’s because binge eating is an actual eating disorder, and when most people reference it, they are actually talking about simply over eating, which is all we do.
That’s very important distinction to make.
Regardless, the way reference this, overeating is very important. If you had a stressful day, it’s easy to open up the pantry and grab every snack in sight with no thought. You have some chips, then move onto cereal, grab a couple cookies, then some pretzels, and a piece of chocolate for good measure. 😩
You didn’t track any of it. You feel like you ate everything in sight. You’re crushed. 😔
But step back for a moment. Think about what you actually ate. It’s easy to feel like you just set yourself back thousands of calories, but that is very rarely the case.
In this example, you only “set yourself back” 450 cal. And in the grand scheme of things, that is nothing. There is no reason you can’t just hop right back on track!
You wouldn’t call one chocolate chip cookie a binge, and that is nearly the same amount of calories 😁
This is obviously just an example. I have no idea what you ate. But I do know what many people go through in this situation and it’s all too common. If you feel like you lost control and you’re beating yourself up about it, take a step back. Take a deep breath. It’s OK…
It’s never as bad as you think. And we’ve all been there. Nothing you ate, no matter how much, is going to ruin all of your progress keep moving forward.
