Falafel in an air fryer? Is that even possible? Does it taste the same?

These are the questions I get when I tell my friends and family that I made this delicious Middle Eastern delicacy in the air fryer.

Falafel is usually deep fried. Problem with that is, deep frying adds 75-100 extra calories. When you think of what falafel is made with (chickpeas) this should be a low calorie low fat dish. Think about it, 3-4 falafels, pita bread and the tahini sauce alone is anywhere from 300-700 calories!!! 😳

So let’s take a away the deep frying, use half a whole wheat pita and only a table spoon of tahini sauce and we literally shave off half the calories! Now I have a pita sandwich 175 calories and it ultimately tastes the same!

I’m telling you, the air fryer is EVERYTHING!

2-15oz cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained

1/2c all purpose flour

1/2c chopped fresh parsley

1 egg

1/4c minced onion

3 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp minced garlic

2 tbsp ground cumin

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

Preheat air fryer to 390 degrees. Spray with nonstick cooking spray.

For falafel, place chickpeas, flour, parsley, egg, minced onion, 3 tbs lemon juice, garlic, cumin, 1/2tsp salt and red pepper flakes in a food processor. pulse until blended. Shape into balls. spray with cooking spray.

Cook for 12-15minutes, turning halfway through cooking until nicely browned. Serve with pita and tahini sauce! Enjoy!!!
